PGE and Orsted have signed another power outage agreement for Baltica 2

Leading energy companies PGE and Orsted have concluded a key power outage agreement for Baltica 2 to transform Polish energy by providing green energy from offshore wind farms.

The agreement includes the execution of a drill controlled under the beach necessary for the conduct of 275 kV cable lines and the construction of so-called connection muffs, i.e. stations connecting sea cable lines to land lines. The works will be carried out by a consortium of Polish companies – ROMGOS Stariowski and ZRB Janicki.

Undersea cable lines are designed to transport electricity produced by offshore wind farms to land, to connection infrastructure. The sea section of cable lines connects to a land section on land. Crossing the shoreline, which allows to connect the sea section of cables to the land section, will be made with an unexcavated horizontal directional drill (HDD) technology.

It's the least invasive way to install cable lines. It does not require, as in the case of a traditional open excavation, closure of part of the beach during construction work. It is a safe method, conducted at a significant depth and allows for the preservation of tourist and natural features of the area on which the work will be carried out.

Controlled drilling will lead four undersea export cables through four cable channels under the beach towards the terrestrial transformer station. Each channel will have a length of approx. 1.2 km and an external diameter of approx. 90 cm. Cable lines throughout the section will be arranged in the ground, in separate cover pipes. Contractors shall provide full support to vessels to carry out this task.

The cable installation itself will be carried out as part of a separate contract.In the place of the connection of both sections of cable lines on land, the contractor will build four underground connection muff stations (TJB – Transition Joint Bay). The works will be carried out in Lubiatowo in the municipality of Choczevo, in the district of Wejherów.

PGE and Orsted have already contracted all necessary components for Baltica 2 offshore wind farm, as well as signed contracts for the installation of foundations, turbines and cables. The partners also selected a general contractor for land connection infrastructure. They also obtained all the permits necessary to start construction work. The last step before construction will be the final investment decision (FID) by investors.

Baltica 2 is one of two – alongside Baltica 3 – stages of the Baltica Marine Wind Farm. PGE and Orsted plan to complete the construction of the Baltica 2 stage with a power of approximately 1.5 GW by the end of 2027, while the Baltica 3 stage with a power of approximately 1 GW by 2030. Baltica 2 and Baltica 3 will create Baltica Marine Wind Farm with a total capacity of 2.5 GW, which will significantly contribute to the transformation of Polish energy, providing green energy for almost 4 million households in Poland.
