In the hull hall of the PGZ War Shipyard intensive work is underway on the first frigate of the program Swordfish. Marcin Ryngwelski, president of the PGZ War Shipyard during the visit of the Polish Television, spoke about the progress of the construction of ships and plans for the development of the plant on Gdynia Oxywiu.

Three frigates for the Polish Navy
According to the president of the PGZ of the War Shipyard, the ship currently built, on which the material was constructed, is the first of the three frigates formed under the Miecznik programme. These vessels, referred to as coast defence ships, will carry out tasks primarily related to anti-aircraft defence and the fight against submarines.
According to the information provided, the construction of the following units is on schedule. Launching the first frigate, the future ORP Wicher, is planned for August of this year. Next unit, future ORP Storm, to be launched next year, while the construction of the third frigate, future ORP Hurricane, will start this year.
The first ship of the program is to be handed over to the Polish Navy in 2029.
President Ryngwelski also explained why frigates are built in the number of three.
In operational practice, one unit performs combat tasks, the other one remains in the crew training cycle, while the third one undergoes scheduled maintenance and repairs resulting from the use of resurs.
The new hull hall increases the pace of work
The construction of the frigate is carried out in a modern hull hall created specifically for the purposes of the MEASURANT programme. The investment was financed by building the industrial potential provided for in the contract.
According to the president of the PGZ of the War Shipyard, working in a closed hall allows completely independent production from atmospheric conditions. This makes it possible to maintain high productivity of work and to provide comfortable conditions for employees.
Parallel rescue ship is being built
A modern construction program is also being implemented next to the frigate in PGZ Shipyard rescue vessel p. Lifeguard. This unit is intended to replace existing ORP rescue ships Sand and ORP Lechwho have served in the Navy of Poland for more than half a century.
The new ship will be designed to carry out rescue operations and support rescue operations from submarines. At the same time, its equipment will enable diving work at high depths.
The construction of this unit is linked to the planned acquisition of new submarines in the ORKA program with which the rescue vessel will cooperate.
Participation in the program of destroyers min Kormoran II
PGZ Stocznia Wojenna is also involved in the implementation of the Kormoran II mine destroyer programme. The plant is a member of the consortium responsible for the construction of these units.
As President Ryngwelski stressed, the shipyard is responsible, among other things, for artillery, navigation and communications systems installed on these ships. To date, three units have been transferred to the Polish Navy, while others remain under construction. The whole program is to be completed by 2028.
At the same time, it was pointed out that Kormoran II mine destroyers could in the future become an export product for other countries about which We wrote on our portal.
Development of shipyards as an impetus for the economy
The President of the PGZ of the Naval Shipyard pointed out the importance of the ship programs implemented for the economy. The construction of one ship involves thousands of workers not only in the shipyard itself, but also in cooperating companies from all over the country.
The plant acts as an integrator of systems and components supplied by numerous companies from different regions of Poland, making ship programs implemented on Śmidowicz 48 an important development impulse for the industry.
Perspectives of subsequent contracts
Among potential directions of development were the possibility of building logistics ships that could in the future support the operation of frigates and other units of the Polish Navy.
According to the Chairman of the PGZ of the Naval Shipyard, preliminary discussions are being held on this issue with the Armed Forces Agency. Continuity of procurement is crucial to maintaining staff competence and further national development ship industry.
