PKN ORLEN began the study of the Baltic bottom

From the port of Gdańsk, a ship sailed to examine the geological parameters of the Baltic bottom at the concession of the PKN ORLEN offshore wind farm. Based on the information obtained, the Company will prepare a preliminary technical project for the offshore wind farm.
Preparations for the project of offshore wind farms are increasingly advanced. We have just started another stage of work, which will allow us to prepare preliminary technical projects for the construction of a offshore wind farm. On our concession we also conduct environmental research and wind measurements. All work is carried out with the highest standards and best practices to minimise their environmental impact – said Jarosław Dybowski, Executive Director for Energy at PKN ORLEN.
The research area, with a total area of approximately 131 km2, is located about 23 km north of the Baltic Sea coastline, at the altitudes of Choczev and Łeba. The work will consist, among others, of a series of wells to a depth of several dozen meters below the bottom level. The soil samples taken will be laboratoryly tested for physical and mechanical characteristics and load capacity. As a result, it will be possible to create a preliminary plan for the deployment of turbines and to determine the optimal type and size of supporting structures of wind turbines.
Specialist research is carried out in a region where the Baltic Sea is several dozen metres deep. Among the crew of the ship are geologists, geophysicsians, geotechnicians, laboratory technicians and drillers. The duration of research depends on the weather conditions in the Baltic.
