PKP PLK will increase transport capacity between Silesia and seaports

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe signed two contracts for the design and execution of works for over 100 km of the line: Kalina – Rusiec Łódzki – Zduńska Wola Karsznice. Modernization of coal for more than PLN 1.8 billion will improve the offer of passenger transport and significantly increase the capacity of railways between Silesia and ports of Tricity. The investments are co-financed by the European Union with the funds of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency.

On September 17, Polish Railway Station signed two contracts for the modernization of more than 100 km of line No. 131 of the so-called Coal Line. The investment-covered section runs through the Silesian and Łódź voivodships.

The route is part of the C-E 65 railway bus, belonging to the 6th European Transport Corridor, connecting the Baltic States with the countries located on the Adriatic Sea and the Balkans.

"Modernisation of Coal is an important investment under the National Railway Programme, which will significantly increase the capacity of the rail network in terms of freight. This route will also improve the comfort of access and passenger service. We are consistently implementing projects that increase the potential of Polish railways – both in the area of passenger and freight transport" - said Andrzej Bittel, State Secretary at the Ministry of Infrastructure, the government's representative for combating communication exclusion.

On the Kalina – Rusiec Łódzki – Zduńska Wola Karsznice section, nearly 170 km of tracks will be upgraded. Train efficiency will increase the exchange of 238 journeys. The reconstruction will also cover over 200 km of the traction line. Engineering facilities, i.e. bridges and viaducts, will be better adapted to pass heavy freight depots with a pressure up to 221 kN per axle. 77 engineering facilities were planned to be rebuilt, including 13 bridges and 15 overpasses. The investment increases the level of safety in rail traffic and at junctions with roads. This will ensure the modernisation of 53 crossings and crossings.

"Today signed by PKP Polish Railway Lines contracts for Węglówka worth over PLN 1.8 billion mean that under the National Railway Programme we have contracts for PLN 42.5 billion in implementation. The value of completed investments, realised and those that will start by the end of the first half of 2020, is over PLN 60 billion, i.e. about 90% of KPK. We will implement this ambitious programme, worth over PLN 70 billion" - said Ireneusz Merchel, President of the Management Board of PKP of Polish Railways.

The rebuilt tracks and new safety devices will enable passenger trains to run at speeds up to 140 km/h and freight to 120 km/h.
