Summary of the week, including the judgment on the Norman Atlantic ferry crash

In a weekly review in telegraphic summary, the "PromySkat" portal informs about the most important events of the past days; issues that the ferry industry lives or soon will live. This week, among other things, about a judgment which had just been brought before one of the Greek courts and concerned the case of a loud disaster in the Adriatic Sea.
Ecologically in Gothenburg. DFDS uses new opportunities
The construction of a new offshore power system was completed in Gothenburg. At this point, the last preparatory work is underway to activate the connection, which is located at the 712 wharf. It features one of the most intensive ro-ro terminals in this Swedish port. With this solution, further berth ships in Gothenburg will be able to be connected to an external power supply at the stop, which means that they will not have to use on-board generators. As calculated, the use of cold ironing means a reduction in CO2 emissions by about 650 tonnes per year. One of the first operators to benefit from the new offshore power system will be the DFDS, which intensively adapts subsequent ships to this option of energy consumption. The first ship to use a new source will be Flanders Seaways
Grimaldi Lines picks up a new ship
Only a few weeks have passed since the delivery of the modern ship Eco Barcelona, and Grimaldi Lines welcomes another super-modern unit in their fleet. This time it is Eco Livorno, whose official reception took place on January 29. Thus, it is already the third GG5G type ship produced under the Nanjing Jinling Shipyard contract for the Italian shipowner. Grimaldi Group ordered as many as 12 such ro-ro ships at the Chinese shipyard, designed by Knud E. Hansen's office. Eco Livorno is 238 m long and has a load belt of 7800 m long and the shipowner convinces that GG5G ships are not equal in their class, including in terms of efficiency. In addition to Eco Livorno and Eco Barcelona, the Grimaldi Lines fleet already includes Eco Valencia, which also belongs to the GG5G ship line.
Route Cuxhaven-Immingham. More often and faster.
An important service between Germany and Britain has been enriched with new opportunities. DFDS announced that it would now be more frequent on the Cuxhaven-Immingham route, and that the crossing time on this line would be reduced. As of 1 February, ships of this carrier will also fly on Wednesdays, which means that the number of weekly crossings will increase to six (in each direction). This connection is operated by ships of Selandia Seaways and Britannia Seaways. The crossing time will shrink from 24 to 19 hours. "With additional departure and more leveled leaves in the evening, we will provide our customers with an even more attractive and reliable alternative when it comes to transporting their cargo from/to the UK" said Ortolf Barth of DFDS.
Modern and ecological catamarans in the European carrier fleet
Dutch company Rederij Doeksen joined its fleet a new ship. This is exclusively fuel-fuelled with LNG ferry Willem De Vlamingh. First voyage with passengers he performed on 26 January. It is already the second ecological and light-duty unit of this carrier (the first was Willem Barentsz, who appeared in the operator's fleet on 3 July). Both ferries make connections between the islands of Vlieland and Terscheling in the Watt Sea.
Verdict on the Norman Atlantic ferry crash
The Greek court ruled on the Norman Atlantic ferry crash that burned down in the Adriatic Sea six years ago. In the trial before the court of first instance in Piraeus, 11 Greek citizens were accused, who had previously heard allegations, among other things, of insecurity and breach of security procedures. Five of them were found guilty. The tragic cruise, which took place in late December 2014, involved approximately 475 people, including 55 crew members and a minimum of three illegal immigrants. According to official reports, at least 12 people have died (this number is imprecise, among others, due to the difficult number of passengers "on a stowaway", and many people still have missing status). According to some sources, the number of fatalities may have exceeded 30. In 2019 eaten by fire ferry He went to a junkyard in Turkey.
