Visit of the Italian frigate Luigi Rizzo to Gdynia

February 25, an Italian frigate entered the war port in Gdynia Marina Militare Luigi Rizzo (F 595), type FREMM (Bergamine). Her presence at the port, scheduled for Thursday, is closely related to the role she performs as part of the NATO mission to the Brilliant Shield Baltic.

The tightening of the situation in the east of Europe, and in particular the aggressive policy of Russia, poses new challenges for regional security, especially maritime security in the Baltic Sea. As a key ally on the eastern flank of NATO, Poland strives to strengthen its defence and operational capabilities at sea, where the lack of modern units becomes increasingly felt.

Marine Military frigate mission Luigi Rizzo, began early January of that year when the unit left the naval base in La Spezia. As early as January 13, 2024, this ship first wrapped up in Gdynia Warport, replacing its twin unit, frigate Antonio Marceglia (F 597). The visit of the Italian frigate shows solidarity and support from NATO Member States. The involvement of this technologically advanced unit in the Brilliant Shield operation is extremely important to increase security in the Baltic Sea and to strengthen anti-aircraft and missile defence in the region, which is particularly important in the face of the escalation of threats from Russia.

Mission Luigi Rizzo in the Baltic, stresses the importance of international cooperation in maintaining stability and security. The lack of Polish ships with similar combat capabilities makes this mission extremely important for the protection of the interests of Poland and the entire Alliance.

The equipment of the Italian frigate with modern weapons systems, including MBDA SYLVER A50 anti-aircraft missile launchers and OTO Melara 127 mm cannon, strengthens NATO's defence structure in the Baltic Sea. The presence of frigates Luigi Rizzo in Polish ports, in addition to the military dimension, symbolizes the unity and determination of the States of the Alliance in defence of common values.

Faced with ongoing international tensions and the need to increase defence capacity, Poland is based on the support of allies. International cooperation and initiatives such as operations Brilliant Shield are crucial for ensuring stability and security in the Baltic region, which underlines the importance of integrated defence against potential threats. These actions not only testify to international solidarity, but are also an effective way to strengthen the position of Poland and NATO on the geopolitical map of Europe.
