Port Gdańsk strengthens the state budget and the national labour market

Over PLN 40 billion is the average annual tax revenues to the state budget associated with the activity of the Port of Gdańsk, precisely with cargo handling. According to the report prepared by PwC Polska.

This amount shows the scale of the importance of the largest seaport in Poland for the national economy. However, the impact of the Gdańsk port goes far beyond transhipment and transport. These are also jobs, salaries for thousands of families and tax revenues that supply the state budget.

According to PwC Poland's analysis, revenues from cargo taxes operated in Port Gdańsk constitute an important source of revenue for the state. Only in 2024 they amounted to PLN 44,6 billion, or 6.5% of total revenue to the state budget. In order to illustrate the scale, the amount of PLN 44,6 billion is the equivalent of measures allowing the construction of about 100 thousand municipal housing units. This is also over 70% of the annual budget of Family 800+, which costs about 63 billion PLN.

The revenues to the public finance sector are also generated from economic activities carried out in Port of Gdansk And around him. On the whole of Poland in 2024, it is about 8.8 billion PLN.

Port Gdańsk is an economic organism closely linked to global trade, bringing real benefits to the people of Gdańsk, Pomerania and the whole country in high annual revenues to the state budget. These are measures which return to citizens, for example, in the form of public services, investment or social programmes, while at the same time proving that developing port infrastructure is a strategic investment

Over 83 000 jobs in Port Gdańsk

The latest report prepared by PwC Poland also shows that in Port Gdańsk employment in business entities stricte The port and operating area has about 16,000 people. Entrepreneurs operating in the port also provide jobs to residents of nearby powiats – mainly Gdańsk and Kartuskie, but also from the neighbouring Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.

Its activity stimulates demand for other services, including transport, which generates more jobs. In 2024, the activity of Port Gdańsk generated a total of 83,7 thousand jobs in the entire national economy. This means that one in three jobs linked to port activities are created outside its immediate surroundings. Moreover, as much as 5.7 percent of all employees in the Pomeranian Voivodeship are connected with the activity of the Port of Gdańsk – it is every 20th place of work in the region.

The influence of Port Gdańsk on society goes beyond its employees. It is estimated that the operation of the port provides maintenance for more than 209 thousand people in Poland – a number reflecting the population of a large Polish city, such as Częstochowa, Radom or Toruń. The revenue associated with working in the port goes to nearly 70,000 households, including families with children. In 2024 the total income of these farms amounted to PLN 8.1 billion. This is a huge impulse for consumption, which translates into the development of trade, services and the local and national economy.

The activities of the Port of Gdańsk are jobs not only directly in the port itself, but indirectly throughout the region and the country. Hundreds of thousands of people living from the work of our port show how important we are to the functioning of local communities and economy of Pomerania and the whole of Poland.

Key pillar for the development of Pomerania

The latest PwC report shows the impact of the port in four key areas: labour market, added value and GDP, public finances and foreign trade.

The study used the Leontief model to capture the full impact scale Port of Gdańsk to the economy, estimating both direct and indirect and the induced impact of economic activity. The direct effect is the activity of companies operating in the port. The indirect includes their suppliers, and the induced result from the spending of workers that drive consumption and further economic development.

Port Gdańsk is much more than a logistics hub today – it is one of the pillars of the Polish economy. Its activity strengthens the sustainability of public finances, increases household income and stimulates the development of local communities. This is a classic example of a strong multiplier effect – one link of infrastructure drives employment, income and development in many sectors of the economy.
