Port Gdańsk – a key role in the European logistics system

During the European Economic Congress (ECG) 2025, representatives of the Port of Gdańsk presented an infrastructure investment strategy, highlighting its key role in Europe's logistics system and energy security in the face of growing geopolitical tensions.

Investment is the foundation of stability in unstable times

On one of the panels on EKG, the President of the Port of Gdańsk, Dorota Peć, pointed out the strategic role of seaports in ensuring continuity of supply. Nearly 90% of global trade is by sea, making port infrastructure one of the pillars of the functioning of European economies.Port of Gdańsk, serving both energy raw materials and consumer goods, has an important role not only in economic terms but also in the context of State security.

The President stressed that the current investments are implemented on a continuous basis, with the prospect of long-term development. She also pointed out that the changing geopolitical realities are forcing port managers to perceive infrastructure not only by commercial capacity, but also in strategic terms, including safeguarding food supply, energy resources and maintaining capacity to respond to crises.

Baltic Hub – Extension of transhipment capacity

The expansion of the container terminal remains a key element of the development strategyBaltic Hubwhich is the largest such object in the Baltic. In 2024, Port Gdańsk handled over 77 million tons of cargo and 3.5 thousand ships, generating significant revenue to the state budget for excise duties, VAT and customs.

The ongoing construction of the T3 terminal, covering, among others, the quay with a length of 717 metres and a 36-hectare storage area will increase the handling capacity by an additional 1.5 million TEU per year. The investment worth around PLN 2 billion is crucial to maintaining the competitiveness of the port on a European scale.

Modern land infrastructure and ecological standards in the Port of Gdańsk strategy

The development of port infrastructure requires parallel modernisation of land connections. The port of Gdańsk talks with PKP PLK about the construction of a second railway bridge, which will allow efficient handling of growing freight volumes. In the assessmentport management, the lack of adequate railway facilities may limit the efficiency of the investments carried out.

Port Gdańsk adapts its activities to the requirements of the European Union's climate policy, implementing projects consistent with the assumptions of the blue and green economy. The aim is not only to increase capacity but also to minimise the environmental impact of port activities.

The importance of Port Gdańsk in the logistics security system

In the light of global tensions and security risks of critical infrastructure, Port Gdańsk strengthens its position as an alternative and safe transport route in the region. Modern conflicts and hybrid threats show the need to have ports capable of responding flexibly to changes in supply chains.

On the growing importance of protecting critical infrastructure in the Baltic, we wrote earlier on our portal, noting the need for synergies between the port industry and the maritime forces responsible for maritime security.

In conclusion, President Dorota Peć pointed out that forPort of GdańskIt is not only the current functioning that is crucial, but the readiness for future challenges. "Strategic ports must have a crisis-resistant and flexible infrastructure against changing realities. Investment is not a choice for us, but a necessity – the foundation of economic and energy security of the country – stressed.
