Port Gdańsk: a new regular connection to Scandinavia

Poland is a welcome destination by foreign carriers, due to the dynamically growing local consumer and production markets. The new merger was formed with the reorganisation of the shipping and transport and logistics company Nor Lines, belonging to the global logistics group Samskip.

The operating centre of the Nor Lines company, operating on the Polish-Norway line, was transferred to Gdańsk from Świnoujście. The decision was influenced by logistical factors. The port of Gdańsk is the best connected Polish port, allows the creation of multimodal transport chains, and also provides modern handling infrastructure.

– We respond to market needs by offering counterparties the right conditions. We also have an advantage in the form of excellent hydrographic parameters, which do not cause virtually any limitations for ships. If we consider that Gdańsk is the largest port of our country with more than 46% market share, then the natural consequence is the emergence of new directions in the network of connections from Gdańsk – says Łukasz Greinke, President of the Board of the Maritime Port of Gdańsk.

The line will be operated by multi-tasking units equipped with side gates (ro-ro ships) and cranes capable of lifting up to 50 t. Each ship offers the possibility to transport refrigerated, burnt cargo, containers, ro-ro cargo and project cargo. One of the main commodities carried by Samskip is fish from Norway, which Poland (and especially the Pomerania region) is one of the main processors in Europe. These will go from Nor Lines ship decks to PAOP Refrigeration Magazines (North Atlantic Producer Organisation) on the Free Customs Coast. The investment charges of the project cargo and others in the export account will be stored in the warehouses of Vetro operating there on the WOC. "This not only facilitates the work of shipowners, but also shows the correlation of the work of various entities operating in Port Gdańsk", explains Łukasz Greinke.

The destination on the route from Gdańsk will be located in the largest town of northern Norway port in Tromsø. It will be the only direct connection from Poland to northern Norway. Furthermore, the new Nor Lines connection line also serves other ports, both Norwegian and Danish. Transports will be carried out every week, the first Nor Lines ship will appear off the coast of Gdańsk already this week.
