Port Gdańsk leader
According to CSO data, the largest quantities of goods are transhipped by Port Gdańsk, which in the first half of the year saw an increase of 40.7%. This means that between the beginning of January and the end of June, more than 21.5 million tonnes of goods were transported through the port in Gdańsk. Transshipments in Gdynia and Świnoujście have also grown, but their results are not so spectacular – the increase was 13.4 per cent (to 8.2 million tonnes) and 2.8 per cent (to 4.4 million tonnes) respectively.
– The increase in transshipment in Polish ports is a clear proof of their development potential – commenting on these results, said Minister of Maritime Affairs and Inland Shipping Marek Grobarczyk. – This is to be done by further investments, such as the construction of the Central Port in Gdańsk, the construction of an external port in Gdynia and the construction of a container terminal in Świnoujście," the minister emphasised.
– Everything points to the fact that another record will be broken this year too," noted Marek Grobarczyk.
It seems very likely. Last year Port Gdańsk overcharged more than 40 million tonnes of goods, and if the growing trend continues, this year it can top 50 million tonnes.
Marek Grobarczyk pointed out that the development of seaports should entail the development of infrastructure that will further increase their handling capacity.
