The port of Gdańsk prepares for modernization of 4 successive quays

Port Gdańsk is a great construction site in recent years. The investment is now coming to an end, crucial for the development of the Internal Port, linked to the deepening of the water track and the modernisation of more than 5 km of the wharf, and is already being designed another, which is a continuation of it.
The project is called "Improving access to the Port of Gdańsk – modernization of the water track 2". The project envisages the expansion of four inland port quays, with a total length of 1916 metres, along with railway infrastructure. The Wiślane and Bytomskie wharfs are located along the Port Canal, while the Rudowe III and partly Coal wharfs are the waterfronts located in the Mining Basenie.
The project has any necessary documents: design, environmental, as well as approval and authorisation. CINEA is expected to complete the project evaluation process
for June 2022. The total value of the project is about PLN 533 million, of which EU funding of 85 percent of the costs will amount to just over PLN 453 million. The planned investment period is 2022-2026.
"On 18 February, we submitted a proposal to the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) to fund this investment, under the CEF 2 Facility" – explains Monika Charlińska – Bodziony, Director of Acquisition and Settlement of ZMPG SA Funds.

The project will increase the competitiveness of the Port of Gdańsk, strengthen the capacity for transhipment, and increase capacity. This investment will improve the quality and standard of ship handling, as well as working conditions, increase the handling capacity and the ability to operate larger units. Furthermore, the length of the mooring line will be increased and the shore lines will be adapted to the needs of vessels with maximum allowable immersion so that they can navigate safely in the Port Canal.
Quay Bytomskie is to serve as a universal waterfront after the reconstruction. The expansion is planned for a section of 204 metres in length. The investment is connected with the adaptation of the existing shoreline to the planned vessel traffic in the Port Canal and within the Main Port Rotator. The expansion of the next wharf – the Rude III – aims to create a universal transhipment site, adapted for the operation of cargo ships with a load capacity of 35,000 DWT.
As part of the task, a section of 232 metres long and a fragment of 18 metres long administrative wharf will be rebuilt. In addition to hydrotechnical constructions, electrical networks, water supply networks, linear drainage and rainwater drainage of the waterfront and access to the waterfront will be undergoed. The course of railway tracks will also be adjusted. Quay will be adapted for handling LHM550 mobile devices.
Next quaythat is planned to be rebuilt is Quay Hanging on a 918-metre stretch. The task will be to make a new waterfront plate, placed on a new sealed wall and a new burning system. There will also be work to be done by the waterfront. This will increase the operating parameters limit values (including the depth of the Port Canal at the wharf to 12 m.
In addition, the necessary elements of the site's weapon network and the modernisation of the rail track system on the wharf are to be made. In turn, the first stage of reconstruction of the Coal Coast covers a section about 540 metres long. This project provides for the execution of several transhipment stations.
Let us remind, that the "Modernisation of the water track, the expansion of the waterfront and the improvement of the conditions of navigation in the Internal Port in Gdańsk" is coming to an end, supported by the CEF Facility. The construction work has already been completed, the reception and final settlements are currently underway. The final of the whole project is planned at the end of June. The cost of this investment is approximately PLN 595.5 million.
This long-term investment of ZMPG covers: Oliwaskie, Ziółkowski, Poczta Polska i Mew defenders, Zbożowe, Wisłoujście, Railway Station Trees and sections of the Pier: Wiślany, Szczeciński and BON with a total length of about 5 km, and a 7 km waterway of the Internal Port. Thanks to the modernisation of the water track, the allowed dive ships entering Internal Port. Units up to 250 m in length, 35 m in width and 10.6 m in depth may be operated in the Port Channel; on the Kashubian Channel ships up to 190 m long, 25 m wide and 9.35 m submerged.
