Port Gdańsk strengthens relations with Asia. He opened an office in Shanghai

Port Gdańsk, as the first Polish port, opened its foreign office on another continent. Building strong relations with China – the world's largest market – is one of the most important goals of the Gdańsk port.

– Port Gdańsk is now the fastest developing port of Europe. The Port Board places a strong emphasis on expansion to Asian markets, because that is where – also from the perspective of the Ministry – we see huge potential. Opening the office is another step in a consistently implemented marketing and trading strategy. The effects of this action cannot be missed. The Polish maritime economy is growing stronger and more marked on foreign markets – says Grzegorz Witkowski, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Shipping.

The Port Board is in the process of making the largest investments in its history. Already today, Port Gdańsk is the only port in the Baltic that operates the largest transoceanic container ships, thanks to which Poland has a direct connection to Asian ports. Investments have this potential to increase.

– The investment programme we implement goes far beyond the borders of Poland and Europe. The construction of the Central Port is interested in entrepreneurs from China, among others. Remember, this is the biggest market in the world. We want to be in constant contact with representatives of Asian markets to respond as soon as possible and fully to their needs – says ZMPG Vice President for Infrastructure, Marcin Osowski.

In Shanghai, a representative of the Port of Gdańsk works permanently, which is responsible for strengthening the existing partnership with Chinese companies, acquiring new customers and coordinating cooperation, including in the field of investment. The representation was created in cooperation with PAIH (Polish Investment and Trade Agency).

– We have a lot of work and challenges ahead of us. Port Gdańsk has been working intensively for months to prepare the ground for the opening of the office. It would not have been created if we had not been sure that the Chinese saw great potential in cooperation with the Gdańsk port. Representation is proof that Poland treats Asia as an important partner and does everything to facilitate business contacts. This is a very strong, positive signal for Asian entrepreneurs – explains Mateusz Dawidowski, the main representative of the Port of Gdańsk in Shanghai.

Strengthening relations with China and expanding the network of business partners is also an opportunity to increase trade opportunities for countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Another representation will be established in the Czech Republic – for countries that do not have direct access to the sea, Port Gdańsk is the fastest and cheapest way to transport goods.
