Elbląg regains access to the sea. What will the economy of the region gain?

Unlocking access shipping to the port of Elbląg is not only a symbolic close to an investment started years ago. This is a concrete change in the supply arrangement on the Vistula Water, which opens up new opportunities for regional logistics and industry.
In the article
The deepening of the water track, the construction of the rotor and the planned terminals in Żytnoj and Radomska are intended to give the port real tools for handling short-distance cargo, seasonal passenger traffic and local economy. This is followed by not only large money from EU programmes, but also hard dates – 2027 and 2029 – which finally turn political disputes into action.
What the economy will gain
The most important are the technical parameters. New Waterway through Measure and Deeper track to port in Elbląg are to accept units up to 100 m long and submerged up to 4 m. This clearly defines the cargo profile: smaller batches of bulk loads, small loads in pallet standard, industrial components, construction materials and agricultural products. So far, these volumes have largely hit roads and railways, which have often raised unit costs. Short passages through the Vistula Basin and water relations to the Tricity can fill this gap and relieve land transport.
The second pillar is the new terminals. The water track itself is not enough – you have to have a place to quickly postpone, store and unload the cargo. The city launched a competition for the design of the T2 terminal at Żytnia Street and modernization of the existing facilities at Radomska Street. It depends on design decisions whether Elbląg becomes a port capable of working in just-in-time rhythm, or if it remains a seasonal enclave.

The added value is the network effect. Even if the volumes are not impressive, any constant stream of cement, aggregate, grain or steel removed from the region's land roads means lower traffic jams and lower social costs. With a stable schedule, shipowners and operators can plan contracts and stock rotation with greater stability.
Equally important is the closure of funding. The value of the port infrastructure is estimated at approx. PLN 200 million, of which up to 85 percent can be supported by the FEWIM programme. Such a framework They're forcing a fast pace of work so that the money doesn't go away. At the same time, the self-government prepares the modernization of land connections, including the access to the S7 route.
The deepening of the track by 2027 and the first wrapping of a seagoing ship in 2029 mean more than a normal record on the calendar. They give operators and tenants of squares a clear time horizon, which allows them to negotiate contracts more confidently today and plan volumes based on a stable time frame.
Elbląg Port enters a decisive phase of preparation
From the stage of the declaration at the last time Elbląg became concrete. Work began on the programming-space concept of the T2 terminal at Żytnia Street and the expansion of the port facilities at Radomska Street. The procedure is conducted in restricted competition mode – nine entities have submitted for participation, and only selected will be invited to the next stage.
As President Michał Missan emphasizes, connecting the waterway with the network of roads and railways significantly increases the investment attractiveness of the city, which is already visible today after the growing interest of companies and the development plans of the metallurgical sector and heavy industry.
No less important remains the deepening of the Elbląg River on the section leading directly to the port. This task is carried out by the Maritime Office in Gdynia, which commissioned the preparation of project documentation together with authorial supervision. Its completion date was set at 21 February 2026. Only after this stage will it be possible to tender for hydrotechnical works. At the same time, a contractor for the removal of the track property was selected from point P2 to port.
The schedule organizes further stages of investment – from documentation and financing to field work – and provides a real basis for the final competition, in which the three best concepts will be awarded the amounts of PLN 50, 85 and 150 thousand for the first three seats. At the moment of publication of the text, the city has not yet announced the results of the competition.
Port in Elbląg and Wiślany Basin: rotor, terminals and new opportunities for logistics
In the public debate, technical details are often eluded, which in practice determine port efficiency. Such an element is the planned rotor – a solution allowing to shorten the time of maneuvers of the units entering and leaving Elbląg. It's possible. will build constant connections almost in linear rhythm. The second, less frequently raised thread, is seasonal tourist peaks. Stable water track and full navigational marking open the way to regular coursethe passengers after the Vistula Water, which can supplement the port's operation outside the hours of the largest load laying.
The so-called "last kilometer" in port logistics cannot be overlooked. How the squares and the access system will be designed will directly translate into the cost of handling and cost-effectiveness of the operation. Well constructed terminal facilities can reduce unit costs by several or even several percent.

The last thread is regulatory and environmental stability. Since the parameters of the waterway have been analysed over the years and are now clearly defined, operators can count on the predictability of maintenance costs and the absence of unexpected administrative barriers.
For years, Elbląg was considered a symbol of unfinished investment and political dispute. Today this card is slowly turning around. Port doesn't have to compete with the largest volumes, but can manage niches important for the local economy and short-distance transport. If the schedule is met and the new terminals are established as planned, Elbląg will become an important link in the supply chain at the Vistula Watershed and a real complement to the sea transport operated in Tricity.
