Szczecin and Świnoujście ports grow faster than the market

The Samskip company introduces a weekly connection between Gdańsk and ports of Denmark and Norway. Thus, a new regular container line appeared on the Szczecin Coast in Port Gdańsk.
Ports in Szczecin and Świnoujście record a solid increase in transhipments, mainly driven by bulk goods – from "other mass goods" to grain, oil and coal. Despite the declines in ore, containers and generality, the Board of Ports emphasizes that the second half of the year is even better, and investments worth PLN 1.5 billion are intended to strengthen the whole complex as one of the most important in the region.
The growth leaders are other bulk goods, which increased service by 14.5 percent, cereals recorded an increase of 7.7% and 5.8 percent more compared to last year – oil and coal.
The negative balance after seven months is recorded by red ore, containers (with a large increase of nearly 17 percent in July) and small.
The Management Board of the Sea Ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście expects that the growth dynamics of the following year will be higher than before.
"This can be seen after the July results of July this year until July of the year, where cereals have an increase of nearly 64 percent, or coal by 53 percent upwards and containers on a plus of almost 17 percent," the release states.
Szczecin and Świnoujście form a universal port complex, in which in 2018 general cargo accounted for 47%, mass fixed 39% and mass liquid 14 percent.
The last year, the team of Szczecin-Świnoujście ports ended with a record result of 29 million tonnes of goods handled. This means an increase of 12.5 percent compared to 2017.
The Board of Ports forecasts that the growth trend should continue this year, reaching around 30 million tonnes of goods handled at the end of the year.
"But remember that the market can happen capricious and may there are factors on which neither the management nor the handling companies have an influence, and which in turn translate into the volume of the goods being handled," the Communication states.
The Port Management Board and port companies take a number of actions aimed at acquiring additional goods. This objective is served by planned investments in port infrastructure.
The investment plan of the board assumes spending nearly PLN 1.5 billion in ports in Szczecin and Świnoujście, within the current EU perspective 2014-2020. The modernisation of the waterfront in Szczecin in the area of the Dębicki Canal and the Kashubian Swimming Pool will be crucial, whose technical parameters will be adapted to the new depth of the Świnoujście-Szczecin watercourse, i.e. 12.5 m.
In the ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście, port infrastructure will be expanded and modernised. In Świnoujście, the ferry terminal for intermodal transport will be expanded and a new parking for 300 trucks will be created. In turn, a new post for redistributing LNG will appear in the gas pipeline.
"It is also necessary to take into account investments of other entities in port access infrastructure, i.e. to deepen and modernise the Świnoujście-Szczecin water track to a depth of 12.5 m, to expand the S3 route, to modernise railway routes and to sail the Odrzańska Way of Water" - wrote the Communication of the Board of the Maritime Ports of Szczecin and Świnoujście.
"All these activities are intended to increase the competitiveness of the Szczecin-Swinoujście port team. This will result in a growing volume of handled cargo mass each year" – added.
