The members of the Law and Justice have tabled a draft resolution of the Sejm on halting construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline

PiS MPs brought a draft resolution on Nord Stream 2 to the Marshal's staff on Wednesday. The project calls for the construction of Nord Stream 2 to be discontinued immediately and calls on Germany to withdraw its support for this construction. The draft was addressed to the first reading in the committee.

PiS MPs from the project wrote that the Sejm takes "the assumptions of the Energy Union, based on the principles of energy security, solidarity and trust of all members of the European Union". He believes that energy resources "should not be used as an instrument of political pressure towards other countries".

They pointed to the "cases of Russia's cessation of supply of energy resources, especially for political reasons or without a credible justification and the use of this instrument for political pressure on partners, in particular Ukraine".

The project also highlights "the continuing strong dependence of many Eastern European countries on the supply of energy raw materials from Russia, despite significant progress in recent years in diversifying routes and sources of supply, as well as the expansion of cross-border transmission infrastructure".

It also points out that "Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline aims only at changing supply routes rather than diversifying them" and "existing gas transmission capacities from the eastern direction are sufficient to ensure the necessary volumes of supply of this raw material in Europe".

The project also states that the gas pipeline will lead to a further increase in Russia's share of the EU's gas market, while the aim of the EU Energy Union is to diversify suppliers, sources and routes, as confirmed by the European Council.

It was indicated that Russia's "multidimensional actions aimed at destabilising the European Union, NATO and its neighbours, which require increased resilience to these threats".

"In view of Russia's failure to respect human rights obligations, such as those of organised actions aimed at the fundamental rights of its citizens. Given the authoritarian nature of modern Russia, the persecution of representatives of political opposition and civil society, and the adoption by the Russian Federation of legal solutions which restrict the right of its citizens to associate, demonstrate their views and stand as candidates in elections. By accepting an international policy of sanctions, including economic ones, aimed at prompting Russia to abandon its policy of interference with third country political processes. We call for the construction of Nord Stream 2 to be immediately discontinued as a project contrary to the aim of increasing the energy security of the European Union, as well as the security and stability in Europe in all aspects" - it is written.

The project also called on Germany, "our ally in NATO and our partner in the European Union, to withdraw all support for the implementation of the project, in the name of ensuring stability and security in Europe and increasing the Union's resilience to pressure from Russia, as well as in solidarity with Ukraine".

"We call on the international community to step up their commitment to stop the construction of Nord Stream 2" - they concluded the draft resolution by the PiS MPs.

The draft was aimed at first reading in the Committee on Foreign Affairs. A Member and Vice-President of the Law and Justice Council Radosław Fogiel became a representative of the applicants.

The pipe, consisting of two strands, is almost complete. The Budowie oppose, among others, Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic States, stressing that the completion of the project will increase Europe's dependence on gas imports from Russia and will extend Kremlin's political influence on European policy. The project is supported by Germany, Austria and several other EU countries.
