General cargo hold fire AAL Gladstone in Port Gdańsk
Above the port part of Gdańsk there was a dense pillar of black smoke after on 11 April around 15:00 a.m. fire appeared in the cargo space of the ship AAL Gladstoneflying the flag of Cyprus. According to service reports and local media, fire appeared at the site where waste, scrap metal and rubber components were stored.
The first responders of the Port Fire Department "Florian" were sent to the PSP Municipal Headquarters in Gdańsk. The city fire brigade was then included. According to the press officer KM PSP in Gdańsk brig. Jack Jakobczyk's fire was extinguishing seven units of the State Fire Department. In parallel, the crew of the ship took action using on-board systems. Eventually, the cargo bay was closed and launched fire protection systemy units, which allowed to choke the fire.
The cause of the incident is being determined
The most important safety information remains unchanged: none of the 25 crew members were injured. At about 6:00 p.m., the police had already reported that there was no smoke from the deck, which meant mastering the most dangerous phase of the entire incident.
The available traffic data show that AAL Gladstone is a small ship with IMO number 9393541, which went to Gdańsk the same morning. The fact that the unit enters the port itself does not have a causal connection to the fire, but organizes the chronology of events. At the moment, there is no evidence in publicly available sources of the ultimate cause of the fire. There are only indications that the fire appeared during unloading work conducted in the hold.
In practice, this means that the most serious effects have been reduced on the wharf. This is good news not only for the crew and the operator, but also for the port itself, where the fire in a closed cargo area, it is always a particularly difficult challenge for emergency services. Further conclusions on the ignition source, however, need to be waited until the investigation is completed.
