Obtaining amber from the Wislana mine is not profitable

The analysis showed that the extraction of amber from the site of the Wiślana mine excavation is economically unprofitable," wrote Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Marek Grobarczyk in response to the interpelling.
"The analysis of the profitability of amber mining in the area of the planned investment has shown that the extraction of amber is economically unprofitable, i.e. the cost of extraction of the mineral from the deposit would be higher than the actual value of the extracted amber," we read in response to the interview.
Signed in response to the interview, Deputy Minister Gróbarczyk points out that the investor, i.e. the Maritime Office in Gdynia, after considering the profitability of amber extraction, decided not to carry out any works related to amber extraction in the framework of the contract "Building a waterway connecting Zalew Wiślana with the Gulf of Gdańsk".
"The cost of obtaining the concession (on the basis of the estimates made) would be PLN 214,4 thousand net, and the cost of collecting the seed (as part of carrying out the works according to the replacement design documentation) would be approximately PLN 54,4 thousand net. The cost of replacement design solutions (costs of separating amber from screening according to changed assumptions plus costs of additional protection, monitoring, transport) is about PLN 130 thousand net" – we read.
In response to the interview, it was pointed out that the works carried out in the area of Wiślana Mierze are not related to the operation of the amber deposit, but to construction works aimed at the implementation of the investment, i.e. the construction of a waterway connecting the Wiślana Zalew with the Gulf of Gdańsk, not the economic extraction and exploitation of the mine deposit, including the amber deposit.
It was explained that "in the course of the project an equivalent solution was accepted for the execution of the lock based on steel sealed walls and the change of the plate structure, with heavy gravitational force on combined anchored CFA stakes under the cover of a shield made in jet-grouping technology".
It was added that this solution significantly reduces the amount of earthworks needed to perform, and in connection with this technology, the land works carried out do not reach the level of the deposit, and the existing extraction of amber is small and took place on the occasion of the work.
As previously reported by the Ministry of Climate and Environment, about 17 kg of amber was extracted in connection with the construction work currently being carried out in connection with the excavation of the Wiślana mine.
