PRS without assigned responsibility for the detention of ships at Tokyo MOU

The Tokyo MoU is one of the most active regional port state control (PSC) organizations in the world. It consists of 21 member bodies in the Asia-Pacific region.

The main objective of Tokyo MoU is to establish an effective PSC control system in the Asia-Pacific region through cooperation and harmonisation of its members. This promotes the elimination of ships engaged in non-standard shipping, the promotion of maritime safety and environmental protection, and the protection of working and living conditions on board ships.

Between 2018 and 2020, 159 inspections were carried out under the Tokyo Agreement on ships sailing under the conventional PRS supervision. Six of them ended in showing some shortcomings, but, as indicated in the report, none of our classification societies are responsible.

This demonstrates a high level of requirements for shipowners by PRS. The continuous improvement of the PRS inspectors, and consequently their high competence, promotes the safe navigation of the ships we supervise. As a result, port State controls do not show any shortcomings in our actions. We continue our efforts to close the next few years with a zero balance of such detentions. – emphasizes Grzegorz Pettke, director of the PRS Ship Pion.

Vessels under the Conventional PRS shall regularly undergo PSC inspections worldwide. A few weeks ago, we made a short guide available to our customers to inform them about current trends of PSC non-conformity and possible ways of repairing them or avoiding such problems.
