Nord Stream 2 Breakthrough

The installation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline was halted after the German Union for Nature Conservation (NABU) sued the Hamburg court to issue a construction permit. The environmental organisation shall inform thereof on its website.

The complaint concerns a permit to build in the German exclusive economic zone in the Baltic. It was published by the Federal Office of Shipping and Hydrography (BSH). Ecologists initially tried to challenge the decision by objecting to the institution itself. In early April, however, BSH rejected the application of NABU.

"We are therefore left with a way of complaints (courts) to protect the Baltic from damage," wrote the organization in a statement.

According to environmentalists, the gas pipeline route in the German exclusive economic zone passes through five marine reserves and several bird stands.

In April, another organization, Deutsche Umwelthilfe, filed a similar complaint before the Hamburg court.

BSH spokeswoman reported that the lawsuits are suspensive, which means they suspend the decision of the office until the end of May of this year.

The two strands of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline are already arranged in 95 percent. About 150 km is missing, 30 km in German waters.
