LNG Jamal: the first transport sent eastward reached China

The first transport sent from the Jamal LNG terminal in Sabietta on the Jamal Peninsula located in the Russian Arctic reached PetroChina plant in Rudong, China.
The success of the first transport of liquefied natural gas to the east marks a breakthrough in the Jamal LNG project. Gas to China was supplied by two gas-crackers with a capacity of 172 thousand m six – Vladimir Ruanov and Eduard Toll. The ships went all the way without the escort of special icebreakers. According to foreign media, this was possible by starting the shipping season in the Arctic and decreasing the ice cover along the North Sea Road.

The LNG jam, managed by the gas company Novatek, sends liquefied natural gas transports to the west also during the winter season (from the end of November to June) when the Arctic sea is bound with an ice cover. In winter, icebreakers flow first to Europe, where gas is transferred to traditional gas carriers and then sent to final customers.
Vladimir Rusanov and Eduard Toll ships, which delivered the first LNG transport to China, form part of the fleet of fifteen arctic grade 7 gas-crackers, which now the Deawoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) company is building specifically for the service of the LNG Jamal. These vessels may freely and continuously pass through an ice cover of 2.1 m thick. Five such ships were deployed to this port by Jamał LNG.
A fleet of icebreakers serving LNG Jamal can swim to Asia without the escort of additional icebreakers from July to November. Two Vladimir Rusanov and Eduard Toll ships sailed from the terminal in Sabietta in late June and shipping to Rudong, China took them 19 days. This means a lot of money and time savings, as it would take 35-40 days to transport to Asia through a transhipment operation in Europe.

Novatek stresses in the Communication that the transport from Sabietta to the west requires only one of the seven navigation zones of the North Maritime Road, while the transport to the east to Asia involves the need to transit through all seven.
Jamał LNG sent the first gas cargo in December 2017. By the end of June this year, a total of 33 LNG transports were sent to Europe.
