The future ORP Mewa docked at Gdynia War Port

On Tuesday, December 27, a future Orp Mewa mine destroyer entered the War Port in Gdynia – the third of six Kormoran II ships, which will be part of the 8th Coast Defense Fleet. The official start of service will take place after the ceremony of first raising the flag of the Polish Navy.

On Tuesday, December 27, the future ORP Mewa left the shipyard and moved to the War Port in Gdynia. After being moored in the mother port with her crew, the commander of Rear Admiral Vladimir Kulagin met.

The ship's transfer preceded several months of transfer and reception attempts during which the marine platform and mine hazard control devices and systems were checked. The successful completion of the collection and reception tests confirmed the ship's ability to carry out its main tasks, including: exploration, classification, identification and combating of seamines, recognition of waterway tracks, conduct of units through mine hazards, placing mines and remote control of self-propelled mine platforms.

The seagull is the third of the planned six modern mine destroyers built for the Polish Navy by the Consortium, consisting of: leader – Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. Shipbuilding S.A. PGZ Stocznia Wojenna. As of 28 November 2017, the first of the series, ORP Kormoran (601), has served as a member of the 13th Trailers Division. On the second ship of project 258, or ORP Albatros (602), the white-red flag was first raised on 28 November 2022, during the celebration of the 104th anniversary of the formation of the Polish Navy in Gdynia.

In December 2017, a month after the flag was raised on the prototype ORP Kormoran, a contract was signed for the construction of 2 further mine destroyers, i.e. Albatross and the Seagulls. In June 2022, during the celebration of the Navy Festival, in the Świnoujski Port of War, Minister of National Defence Mariusz Błaszczak signed a contract for the construction of three further mine destroyers, which in the years 2026-27 will power the 12th Tray Division in Świnouście. Thus, in the coming years, the mine defence forces will be thoroughly upgraded and a total of 6 Kormoran II-type 258-ships will be part of the 8th Coast Defence Fleet.
