KPMG Wind Energy Report

Siemens Games' CEO urges students to choose science to stop climate change, as the new report highlights the social benefits of wind energy.

According to the new KPMG report commissioned by Siemens Games Renewable Energy, a leading wind energy manufacturer, accelerating wind energy absorption will reduce air pollution, save human lives and protect important water resources.

The socio-economic impact of wind energy in the context of energy transition has highlighted significant benefits for society by providing clean energy. The report showed that wind can increase its share of global electricity demand nine times by 2040 (To 34%, now with 4%). Moreover, this could represent 23% of the necessary reductions in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050: 5.6 billion tonnes of CO2, corresponding to annual emissions in the 80 most polluting cities. This reduction would bring real benefits to society, saving up to four million lives per year and reducing health costs by up to $3.2 trillion per year.

In response, Markus Tacke, CEO of Siemens Games, called on students from around the world to choose their studies at STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and their renewable energy careers to play their part in halting climate change.

Students converted the 2019 climate change debate, giving new urgency and energy to a growing crisis. Data confirm this concern, as 60% of wildlife has been lost in just over 40 years.

Tacke, speaking at the beginning of the report, acknowledged the impact that young people had put on this issue and made an unwavering commitment to ensuring a clean energy society as part of efforts to remedy the crisis.

The President sent out a call to young people to start acting, stressing concerns that a serious shortage of students continuing STEM career may leave the industry with the lack of talent needed to make changes. "You can do something, you can choose who changes. Choose STEM"- he said. "Choose a career that will change your interests and passion for change and solutions. The solutions we need now, and tomorrow we'll need more. "

Tacke also stressed the role of regulators, governments and companies in driving the energy transition.

"We all represent different areas today: industry, analysts, political institutions. But we all have the same concern: how to use the knowledge and instruments we have now to start responding to climate change, because there is an urgent need," he said. "The financial incentives and clear policies are still lacking. Barriers to the full transition to renewable energy lie not only in technology costs, but also in long-term strategies and investments to implement these ambitious plans," he added.

The new report also identifies other key benefits from energy transformation. Water scarcity becomes a serious problem affecting 40% of the world's population. The report stresses thatwind can save 16 billion m3 of water by 2030 (equivalent to about 15% of water in the Dead Sea).

Other conclusions from the report are that renewable energy sources can also be key to improving prosperity in less developed countries. Worldwide, billion people still have no access to electricity, and 2.7 billion do not have access to clean fuels and cooking technologies. Through ambitious energy transformation, universal access to both electricity and clean cooking would be achieved within a decade.
