Republicans demand President Biden to sanction NS2

Several Republican Party Senators have presented a bill repealing US President Joe Biden's decision to abolish sanctions against Russian citizens and entities involved in the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

"Biden's administration agrees with a mistaken German strategy that will give (Russian President Vladimir) Putin control of our allies in Europe, risking weakening America's global position," stated Senator Kevin Cramer of the Senate Armed Forces Committee on Thursday.

The project came after the State Department changed its previous position on Wednesday and abolished sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG, conducting the construction of the second part of this pipeline from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea, and Matthias Warnig, its boss. The withdrawal from sanctions was translated by "national security considerations".

"President Biden blocks American pipelines, depriving thousands of Americans of their jobs, but gives green light to the Russian pipeline to send more gas (toxic substances – PAP) to Europe. This is rather a reverse energy policy," commented one of the 14 senators supporting the bill, Bill Cassidy.

"Nord Stream 2 poses a threat to national security and strengthens Putin's regime. Sanctions should never be lifted," Cassidy added.

Construction of the pipeline began during the administration of former US President Donald Trump in 2018. It became the main source of friction between the US and Germany.

In the opinion of analysts, while maintaining the current pace of construction, Nord Stream 2 will be completed by the end of this year, if not earlier.
