Russia strengthens the Baltic Fleet in the Kaliningrad region, and what does Poland do? [Video]

The Russian Federation has for many years consistently strengthened the Kaliningrad Fortress in all areas of military and military types, ranging from tanks and missile artillery systems to ships and air defense systems.

The development of military potential in the Kaliningrad Oblast takes place in a special way, as practically all dislocated units there include organizationally the composition of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Federation.

Why is this important? That is because for decades Russia has avoided arms restrictions resulting from the "Conventional Armed Forces Treaty in Europe (CFE)". The Kaliningrad Oblast is a model example of the cynical actions of the Russian Federation in the area of armaments, the more dangerous that everything takes place at the very border of Poland and in close proximity to the main centre of the country's maritime economy, which consist of ports in Gdańsk and Gdynia, along with the coastal infrastructure.

The Shipyard Portal and other portals have long written and discussed problems affecting the Polish Navy. We have published a number of material on the modernisation of the MW and shipbuilding industry in our country, which is why ignorance seems incomprehensible and raises concerns about the intentions and defence policy currently ruling in the maritime domain.

It is difficult to understand why the issue of maritime safety has been ignored in Poland for over 30 years. Countries with several times less GDP, such as Egypt, Pakistan, Vietnam, modernise their fleets, and in our country, the "wall" which was created in the early 1990s is impermeable in the consciousness of every party that held power.

A few days ago, the media widely described how Russia had been sending new equipment to the Kaliningrad region throughout the past year, strengthening the land and sea forces of the Baltic Fleet. "There seems to be no other fleet of Russian armed forces as strong coastal protection as there is in the Baltic," wrote the newspaper of the Russian Ministry of Defence.

The journal "Iswiestija", also published information about the deployment of the Bastion system division. They are armed with supersonic Onyx anti-ship missiles, the range of which is determined by the Russian source at 600 km. It is therefore larger than in the case of the Iskanders deployed on land. According to the Russian newspaper, both Smiercz and Bastiony are able to neutralize medium-range missiles located in Poland and Lithuania.

At the end of November last year, there was also a small Odincowo missile ship in the Baltic waters. This is the third unit of project 22800 Karakurt, but much better armed than the two previous ones.

In September 2020, the modernisation of the Baltic Fleet's main base in the Baltic Sea, a port at the entrance to the Vistula Basin, which is the westernmost Russian city, began. The base will be able to operate modern ships equipped with maneuvering missiles.

It can be seen that Russia is not idle, despite the pandemic, it strengthens its military forces in the Kaliningrad region, which does not completely translate into strengthening the Maritime Forces in our country.
