Russian warship off the coast of Alaska

American Coast Guard identified a Russian warship of radio-electronic reconnaissance project 864 Meridian (North NATO Vishnya) – Karelia (SSV-535) near the Aleutsk islands off the coast of Alaska. The incident occurred on August 5, when the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard boat Alex Haley (WMEC 39) identified a Russian unit about 30 nautical miles southeast of Amukta Pass.

Action by the American Coast Guard

Although a Russian ship passed through international waters, was within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the United States, which caused concern to the US services. Despite numerous attempts to contact the Russian unit, the American Coast Guard she didn't get an answer. In response to a lack of response, the US Coast Guard picked up a Lockheed HC-130 aircraft, which from the air monitored the movements of the Russian ship, providing full support for Alex Haley's unit.

The 864 Meridian (NATO Vishnya) project ships were built by North Shipyard in Gdańsk from 1985 to 1988. Vishnya class ships played an important role in USSR strategy during the Cold War, providing support for intelligence and electronic activities worldwide.

Commander Steven Baldovsky, in charge of Alex Haley's unit, stressed that these operations are intended to ensure that the presence of foreign warships in the U.S. coastal zone does not undermine US interests. These activities are part of the operation Frontier Sentinel, whose goal is to show the strength and determination of the American Navy in strategically important maritime areas.

Broader context

This event is not the first of its kind in this region. Similar incidents occurred earlier when American Coast Guard has observed the presence of Chinese warships in international waters near Alaska.
