Government program for maritime education. Two new units will be created

A modern research vessel for the Maritime University of Szczecin and a holding school sailboat for the Maritime University of Gdynia will be created as part of a government investment program. The construction of both units is to be completed by 2029.

New vessels for future fleet officers and scientists

According to a document adopted by the government, the investment budget will total over PLN 975 million, of which PLN 796.9 million will be covered by the state budget, and PLN 178.8 million will come from the issuance of treasury securities.

The programme provides for the construction of two ships: a modern school and research unit for the Maritime University of Szczecin, which will be used to carry out scientific and research tasks at sea, and a holding school boat for University of the Sea in Gdynia. The latter, in addition to its teaching function, is also to perform a representative role, taking part in regattas and international events promoting Polish maritime culture.

The project assumes that ships will be equipped with the latest navigation systems, automation solutions and modern marine electronics. As the Ministry of Infrastructure points out, the investment responds to both teaching needs and the strategic objectives of the State in the training of maritime professionals.

Science, diplomacy and promotion of sailing

According to the program's records, the Marine Technical Unit will be adapted to conduct oceanographic research, marine geology and work for the offshore wind sector. It will provide an important strengthening of the research facilities of Polish scientific institutions operating in the field of marine research and the use of marine resources.

In turn, the sailing ship of the Maritime University of Gdynia is to be a training tool not only for future merchant fleet officers, but also to play a role Ambassador of Poland on international sailing conventiones and regatta, as well as participate in activities promoting maritime education and sailing culture in the country and abroad.

Financing and timetable

The programme will be implemented between 2025 and 2029, with a clear indication of the need for a rapid mobilisation of funds. At the time of signature the contract with the selected shipbuilding plant of the yard, which will be responsible for the implementation of the project, provides for an advance of 20% of the contract value. Such a solution, typical of the shipbuilding industry, demonstrates understanding of the needs of the sector and is a concrete example of systemic support for the national shipbuilding industry.
