Miecznik programme progresses at Oksywie shipyard

Today, at the PGZ of the Naval Shipyard, a celebration was held to place a keel under the second frigate of the Miecznik programme – future ORP Burza. The completion of the assembly phase of the base keel means the formal commencement of the construction of the entire hull of the ship.

The ceremony was attended, among others, by the Secretary of State in the Ministry of National Defence Paweł Bejda, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of State Acts Konrad Golota and representatives of the Armed Forces Inspectorate, the Naval Command of the Republic of Poland and partners of the program. Traditional welding of the commemorative medal into the construction of the keel symbolically opened the essential phase of the construction of the hull of the second frigate.

The Miecznik program as a test of the capabilities of the Polish ship industry

Location of the keel under Burza confirms PGZ Stocznia Wojenna consistently and according to the timetable, implements the next stages of the programme Miecznik programme. First frigate – Wind – is already in the advanced phase of hull assembly, while the start of construction of the second unit shows that the yard is ready for parallel execution of tasks of the highest complexity.

Programme Miecznik programme is the biggest challenge in the history of the modern Polish shipbuilding industry and confirms the ability of national shipbuilding companies to carry out projects of strategic importance for the security of our country. Each subsequent stage of its implementation brings closer the moment of the transmission of modern multipurpose frigates to the Polish Navy.

Sword – three new frigates for the Polish fleet

Programme Miecznik programme includes the construction of three multitasking frigates: Wind, Storm and Hurricane. These units will take over the tasks currently carried out by frigates over the next few years ORP Gen. K. Pulaski and ORP Gen. T. Kościuszko, providing the Polish Navy with modern platforms capable of conducting operations in a multi-domain environment.

At the end of the ceremony, the invited guests visited the Cadup Hall of the Naval Shipyard, where intensive work on the construction of the first frigate of the program is carried out. Miecznik programme – future ORP Burza.

Basic parameters of frigate Swordfish

Multi-purpose frigates Miecznik programme are units that will reach a total length of about 138 metres and a maximum width of 20 metres after completion of the construction. The maximum buoyancy, calculated with full equipment and hull plating, will be approximately 7,000 tonnes. Ships are designed to carry out long-term activities at sea – their autonomy is estimated at about 8,000 nautical miles, at a maximum speed of up to 28 knots.

The drive for future Swordsmen will provide four diesel piston engines operating in the CODAD system, which ensures proper maneuverability and operational efficiency of the units. The permanent crew of the frigate will have about 120 sailors, with the possibility of accepting an additional nearly 60 personnel, depending on the nature of the tasks carried out.
