Gdańsk Shipyard enters the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone with production

As early as July, shipbuilding will begin on the areas of Ostrów Island in Gdańsk revitalized by the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone (PSEZ). PSEZ and Balitc Operator (company with GK ARP S.A.) signed an agreement on this matter.

Baltic Operator was established by ARP S.A. in May 2018 as the entity responsible for operationalisation of shipbuilding activities within the framework of the GK ARP S.A. The task of the Baltic Operator is wide support of shipbuilding and related activities (onshore and offshore towers, steel structures) in close cooperation with Gdańsk Shipyard, GSG Towers and Pomeranian Special Economic Zone. The goal of the Balic Operator is to increase the production capacity of companies, in particular in the area of large steel structures and large vessels.

The agreement concerns the lease conditions of the Pomorskie Zone assets and their possible acquisition in the future. It is a lease of an assembly board with an area of about 10 thousand sq.m. and parts of the "C" of Hala 33 nave with an area of approximately 3700 sq.m.. Gdańsk Shipyard intends to produce onshore and offshore wind towers there. In connection with the new contracts, the company expands production and part of it transfers to the front of Ostrów Islands to the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone.

– Gdańsk Shipyard and GSG Towers thanks to new contracts, gradually increase production potential. The natural direction of further development is to take advantage of the opportunities of Ostrów Island and the Pomeranian zone of which we are a shareholder. The signed agreement is the implementation of the declaration made last year and confirmation that the regeneration is proceeding as planned. This is good information for contractors of Gdańsk Shipyard and GSG Towers," said Andrzej Kensbok, Vice President of the Industrial Development Agency.

Gdańsk shipyards and GSG Towers fill the order book. In January, GSG Towers signed a contract with Norwegian company Aker Solutions to install large-scale steel structures. As part of the agreement concluded, GSG Towers will prepare the assembly, installation of equipment and perform the functionality tests of large steel structures – templates. Another contract was concluded with one of the largest wind turbine manufacturers – Siemens Games (order for the supply of 14 complete, land wind towers worth over PLN 20 million). In recent times Gdańsk Shipyard has also signed with the Finnish company Konecranes, under which it will produce cranes for the markets of Europe and North America.

The modernisation work carried out by the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone of Hali 33 will enable the construction of units up to 90 metres long, up to 16 metres wide and directly launching them from the dock or the pontoon. Large steel structures can also be produced in the revitalized building. On the other hand, up to 20 tons per square metre on the assembly plate built next to it, units up to 150 metres in length will be able to be created with the possibility of launching at the Trawler Coast.

The Ostrów Island Front is located almost in the centre of Gdańsk, directly bordering the 550-metre-long Kashubian and Trawler quays, and Gdańsk Shipyard and a well-connected industrial area. The Pomeranian Zone's renovation project aims to adapt them to modern shipbuilding and related production based on the latest industrial technologies. Modernisation of the site is intended to create favourable conditions for other investors as well. A new investor, Ancora, is already operating in the renovated hall 26, producing modern mobile water treatment stations and tanks from liquefied gas transport. If required, the Zone will build a second mounting plate.

– We talk to investors interested in another part of the island that we want to rent them. They're already interested. It is a great location for steel production, with access to water and railway sidings, with a railway ferry crossing. We want the whole area of the Island to be managed and to be a center of maritime, offshore and steel production, to become a body of cooperating companies, making available technological resources – says Przemysław Sztandera, president of the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone.

The detailed conditions and rules for the lease of land by Baltic Operator will be laid down in the lease agreement to be concluded at the end of May. Furthermore, Gdańsk Shipyard is ultimately interested in leasing or acquiring other assets from PSEZ for shipbuilding purposes.
