Szczecin: over 40 facilities from the National Museum for the Marine Science Centre

Engine shipThese, navigation devices and diving suit will be among more than 40 exhibits that will supplement the exposition of the Marine Science Centre established in Szczecin. The facilities will be rented by the Szczecin National Museum.

"The Maritime Science Centre in Szczecin is different from other centres of science, that at the beginning we decided that it would have a historical perspective," said the director of the National Museum in Szczecin (MNS) Lech Karwowski.

Among the exhibits were the engine shipThese, models of Szczecin port and shipyard, models of ships and components of their equipment, including navigation devices and elements of diving outfit.

Director of the Maritime Science Centre Witold Jabłoński stressed that the facilities borrowed from the MNS will complement the prepared permanent exhibition, which will consist of more than 200 exhibits, depicting the history of man's relationship with the sea and intertwining scientific knowledge.

Among them there are to be interactive positions, like a replica of the port enriched with multimedia and visualization of the boathouse workshop – a model of boats in subsequent stages of construction. One of the exhibits will also present the process of launching the ship, using the method of Szczecin shipyards, i.e. in so-called suspenders. Visitors will be able to try this model launching on their own.

Jabłoński stated that the opening of the centre was initially planned for October or November 2022.

The body of the Marine Science Centre is to resemble the hull of the ship, as well as refer to port containers. The building is built on the Oder in the city centre, on the island of Łastownia. His project was developed in 2011 by Piotr Plaskowice.

The multimedia centre was originally to be established as a Marine Museum – a branch of the National Museum in Szczecin. However, in 2017, the councillors of the Sejm decided that it would be a separate institution of culture of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. The Marine Science Centre will bear the name of astrophysicist and cosmologist, the science popularizer Prof. Jerzy Stelmach.
