Another stage of testing propulsion engines for frigate MEASURANT

Representatives PGZ Stocznia Wojenna They spent last week at the Rolls-Royce Solutions GmbH factory in Friedrichshafen, participating in subsequent tests of main propulsion units and generators engines for the Polish Navy frigate Sword.

Let us remind that at the end of April the factory tests of the MTU 20V8000M71 engine, intended for the first of the three planned frigates of the Sword, the future ORP Wicher, as we wrote about on our portal. The PGZ does not slow down the pace, which confirms the completion of the tests for the next two frigates, covering the main propulsion units and engines driving generators at the Rolls-Royce Solutions GmbH factory in Friedrichshafen.

This factory, founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach (non-accidentally similar names), went a long way from the production of power drives to blimps. Zeppelina to manufacture thousands of powerful engines that drive locomotives and vessels, among others.

The tests produced by Rolls-Royce Solutions GmbH of the main engines for the Swords (20V 8000 M71) were organized at a powerful test station (bench test) equipped with advanced measuring equipment. Lloyd’s Register, GQAR (military surveillance), employees, supervised the tests PGZ Stocznia Wojenna and PGZ SA, as well as representatives of the Sales Office of Ruda and the manufacturer.

At the end of the tests, multi-page test procedure documents were prepared, which included engine load scenarios, checking the operation of multiple sensors, the control system's response to exceeding the tested values, and checking certain parameters after the tests, such as oil analysis and oil filter.

Each of the numerous parts of the test lasts from a dozen to several dozen minutes. Based on the collected data, specialized software in the control room produces a very detailed report, which is then the subject of detailed analysis by engineers. All the tests have gone off! This means that in a few months the first engines will be placed in the engine room built in PGZ Stocznia Wojenna future ORP Wicher.

The working engine impresses not only with its dimensions (dimensions 6,65 x 2,04 x 3,38 m; weight 45,3 t), but above all with a unique sound, especially when it works with full power of 11,000 horsepower. Each of the Swordsmen will have four such units.

After the factory tests have been successfully passed, the engines hit the malaria, where, after careful protection of the uncovered elements, they change colour according to the contracting authority's guidelines. The frigate engines will be light grey with distinctive black, hand-painted MTU letters.
