Agreement for modernisation work on the Oder border signed

The Polish Water Farm signed an agreement with the Centre of EU Transport Projects on 3 December 2020 to co-finance the implementation of the project "Modernization Work on the Border Oder to ensure winter icebreaking – sections 1, 2 and 4".

The investment is of a cross-border nature and is one of the biggest tasks currently carried out by the Polish Waters. The project, the subject of which is the implementation of the modernisation of the regulatory building in Oder border, is included in the agreement between the Polish Government and the German Government on a common improvement of the situation on waterways in the Polish-German border in 2015.

"This is the first such large investment in this episode of Oder in decades. This will provide a level of 180 cm for most of the year. This is very good news for residents directly protected from the floods of cities, but also for Szczecin and the entire Odzańska Water Road. It will raise the level of security of the region," said Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Marek Grobarczyk.
The planned works will be performed at the heights of Słubic and Gozdowice. The purpose of the project, through the renovation of old river spurs and the strengthening of shores, is to improve the navigation conditions on the Oder border and adapt to the III class of the waterway, which will ensure a halt to the degradation of the Odzańska Waterway. Work done will reduce the number of places where congestion can occur.

The investments planned by the Polish Waters will improve the operation of winter ice shields and icebreakers engaged in icebreaking operations. The project will also result in ensuring the safety of ice-breaking in the Odra section by bringing to a transit depth of 1.8 m, preserved for 240 days a year, preventing congestion.

The cost of the project is PLN 470 million. The co-financing under POLiŚ is PLN 211.6 million. The remaining funds will come from the World Bank.

A tendering procedure is underway to select the contractor for this task. The contract with the contractor is planned for the first quarter of 2021.

The completion of the investment is planned in the first half of 2023.
