Agreement of the Gdańsk University of Technology with the Management Board of the Maritime Port of Gdańsk

On Thursday, August 13th, an agreement between Gdańsk University of Technology and the Management Board of the Maritime Port of Gdańsk took place in the Captainate of the North Port, which aims to pilot the implementation of Internet of Things (loT) systems to improve efficiency and safety in the Port of Gdańsk.
"One of the important elements that led to the conclusion of the agreement and the de facto launch of pilot implementations of new Internet of Things systems in Gdańsk port are the activities launched by the Marshal's Office of Pomorskie Voivodeship. During the competition mode of selecting Smart Specialization of Pomerania (ISP), UMWP launched an active process of entrepreneurial discovery in 2013, involving various partners from the region, representing business, science, business environment institutions and non-governmental organizations – including ZPMG S.A. and the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Computer Science PG" - said Dr. Łukasz Kulas, Professor of Gdańsk University of Technology.
The planned implementations include the provision of a range of high-tech loT solutions, the creation of data-processing solutions using artificial intelligence mechanisms (AIs), the development of safe and reliable solutions for industry with a particular focus on wireless communication and cyber attack resistance. It is also creating an appropriate technological structure with a particular focus on wireless communication and cyber attack resilience and the creation of a technological structure allowing the creation of IoT/AI integrated systems.
"By analyzing the data collected by the Gdańsk University of Technology and built by PG scientists on the basis of them, we will be able to manage our assets better. Optimising the use and operation of machinery and equipment involved in cargo handling ultimately translates into increasing the attractiveness and market competitiveness of operators that perform such operations. Concepts such as the Internet of Things, Digital Twins or the Predicting of Possible Failures (CBMs) are an integral part of Industry 4.0. The fact that machines have been able to communicate with each other in digital language for several years and transmit vital data in service is no longer a reality known to us from books and stories of the SF. Having the current information n/t of typical routes of wheeled equipment traffic in a given transhipment area, the use of a variety of equipment on a day, week, month should result in an assessment of purchasing strategies or maintenance costs. These data are also a number of benefits for the person managing the allocation of hardware resources to perform tasks. We must not overlook aspects of safety, insurance costs or benefits resulting from the prediction and prevention of equipment failures on the basis of sensor readings measuring the performance of equipment" - added Vice President of the Board of the Maritime Port of Gdańsk, Sławomir Michalewski.

The proposed concept fits into current trends in building advantages in port areas through the use of digital technologies.
"One of the key advantages of Gdańsk University of Technology, especially in the context of the recently acquired status of National Research University, is the proximity of the sea and the key Polish entities permanently connected with the maritime economy. After nearly two years of preparation and close cooperation with employees of ZPMG S.A., we managed to include the area of the Port of Gdańsk in one of the largest European projects in the area of IoT called InSecTT (Intelligent Secure Trustable Things), which will allow to finance the planned activities" - noted Prof. Jerzy Tuesday, Dean of the ETI Faculty.
