U.S. Navy: first unit was created using Bell-Boeing CMV-22B aircraft Osprey

On 14 December, a multi-purpose logistics fleet squadron (Fleet Logistics Multi-Mission Squadron) VRM-30 was announced at the U.S. Coronado naval base. It will be the first U.S. Navy unit to use vertical take-off and landing aircraft Bell-Boeing CMV-22B Osprey.

CMV-22B is a version already used by US Marine Corps (MV-22) and US Air Force (CV-22B) of the first series aircraft created in tiltrotor technology (variant). In the US Navy version Osprey’e differ in increased range, communication systems (high-frequency radio) and external speaker systems. These machines are designed to supply supplies to American aircraft carriers while they remain at sea. This role will be replaced by classic C-2A (R) Greyhound aircraft. Compared to them, the specialized version of Osprey is expected to have a greater operational radius, which raises some doubts (Osprey Marines has an operational range of 1600 and CMV-22B – 2157 km compared to 2400 km Greyhound). However, the load capacity of the new machine is already twice as high (9 t versus 4.5 t). In the case of Osprey, it will be easier to lead with youCargo. It also has better communication equipment and, above all, can land vertically, which significantly simplifies its boarding and allows for e.g.Cargo supplies for aircraft carriers even at makeshift air bases.

VRM-30 will be the first of several units using CMV-22B, and its formation is the aftermath of an agreement concluded with Boeing in July this year, accounting for $4.2 billion. Under its power, the American industry is to deliver 39 copies of CMV-22B. The first will be received in fiscal year 2020 and the last in 2024. For the next several months, VRM-30 pilots will be practicing on MV-22 Marines loaned out.

Currently US Navy operates 33 C-2A Greyhound of 39 ordered in the 1980s. They serve in two logistics squadrons (VRC-30 and VRC-40), air command squadrons to interact with aircraft (VAW-120) and US Navy experimental unit – VX-20. 39 Ospreys can be expected to successfully replace them in all tasks.
