Modernization of frigate F-100: U.S. gives green light to Navantii

The U.S. Department of State formally approved a potential transaction under the Foreign Military Sale (FMS) programme, opening the formal path to thoroughly upgrade five Spanish rocket frigates of type Álvaro de Bazán (F-100). According to DSCA's communication, the value of the package is estimated at about US$1.7 billion.

The decision of the US administration is a formal authorisation for the sale of the main components of the fighting and logistical support systems that Spain intends to incorporate into the modernisation programme Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) all five F-100 ships.

Scope of equipment and support provided at Navantii shipyards

The Spanish proposal includes the supply of key components of the AEGIS system, including five sets of main components of the combat system, six sets of digital signal processors and five sets of vertical Mk 41 missile launchers in configuration Baseline VIII. The program also provides for the installation of modern surface radiolocators another generation

In addition to the main weapon systems, the modernization package includes a wide range of ancillary equipment and services: UHF satellite communication terminals, GPS devices with M-Code functions, AN/SRQ-4 data link components, torpedo countermeasure system upgrades, Mk 32 torpedo launchers upgrade, and support related to Mk 45 marine cannon installation in Mod 2 and Mod 2B versions.

In addition, the contract also includes the supply of software, technical documentation, staff training, spare parts, test equipment and comprehensive logistical support. The cooperation also includes technical and engineering support from contractors, as well as temporary visits by US government staff and contractaries to Spain to oversee the programme.

Modernisation of F-100 and Allied Obligations

American sources indicate that the proposed transaction is intended to support the US foreign and security policy objectives by strengthening the defence capabilities of an important ally in NATO, Spain. The upgrade is intended to improve the ability of the F-100 frigate to carry out anti-aircraft, anti-ship defense and operations within allied naval teams and to maintain compatibility with US operating systems and allied partners.

The implementation of the MLU programme is also part of Spain's national plan to extend the operating life of these units up to the 1920s. Modernisation of F-100 will enable these ships to function effectively in a modern security environment, while ensuring interoperability within NATO structures.

The F-100 frigates for the Spanish Navy were built by Navantia shipyards and transferred to service from 2002 to 2012. The programme was one of the most important technological and industrial projects in the history of the European shipbuilding industry. Covered five frigates of type Álvaro de Bazán and was the first European project to integrate the AEGIS system, which opened the way for Navantii to carry out the most advanced vessel programs and strengthened its position on export markets. Currently, the company plans to participate in the modernization of the F-100 frigate, which aims to extend their operating life to the 1940s.
