Opening of the Ziółkowski Coast this weekend

Quay Ziółkowski often visited by residents and tourists, will again be available to the public. As early as a long May weekend, you will be able to admire units entering the Internal Port, including cruises such as the Spirit of Discovery, flying the British flag, which will dock at the Westerplatte Coast on May 7.

Repair of the waterfront of Captain Ziółkowski It's over. Its modernization – was part of the investment of the Board of Maritime Port Gdańsk S.A., co-financed by the European Union with the CEF instrument. The work related to the project entitled "Modernization of the water track, expansion of the wharf and improvement of the conditions of navigation in the Internal Port in Gdańsk" has already been completed and the project is officially closed in June this year. The cost of the entire investment is over PLN 595 million.

The work was divided into several investment tasks. As part of the task "Development of the Olive Coast in the Port of Gdańsk", a total of 1 365 m (Ziołkowski, Olińskie and the Five Whistles bend) was upgraded, thus creating mooring stations allowing to operate the largest vessels entering the Internal Port. The necessary supporting works were also carried out in the fields of sanitary, electrical, teletechnical, recyclable works, road and rail surfaces and lifting tracks.

The contractor of the contract concluded in January 2019 was Strabag Sp. z o.o. – the leader of the consortium.

Quay Olive is now more functional, which will translate into the possibility of operating more ships simultaneously. The main cargo group to be transhipped on this wharf is the generality, in particular steel products and structures. Units with grain, heavy and oversized loads and passenger cars are also supported. The advantage of this waterfront is a convenient connection to the network of circular, rail and water roads and close proximity to the port entrance. The expansion and modernisation of the wharf enabled the mooring line to be extended to serve several ships simultaneously and increased the capacity of the wharf and possibly the volume of cargo handled.

Quay Ziółkowski in turn gained the possibility of mooring passenger units on the public section. The whole modernisation work will not only increase capacity and security for maneuvering and mooring units, but will make this area more attractive and friendly to visitors who will be able to admire the units entering the port from close range. Quay Ziółkowski is an excellent observation point. Therefore, ZMPG S.A. will soon equip the waterfronts with new benches and garbage cans. And the current outdoor exhibition of photographs showing Port Gdańsk will be updated with new photographs.

The work lasted longer due to the need to carry out additional activities related to archaeological diagnosis and problems with the supply of materials due to supply chain disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The benches and baskets will also appear on the modernized Grain Coast, where new markings, emergency equipment, lighting, railings have emerged as part of the investment. Quay with a view of the fortress of Wisłoujście and the Port Canal liked fishermen and walkers. On the opposite side of the canal at the Vistula River, the construction of the Offshore Competence Center takes place. It is an investment implemented by the University of Maritime Affairs. The centre will be a scientific and research facility for the Polish maritime economy and offshore wind energy.

The oldest rebuilt section of the Oliwiski Coast was the escalator section at the interface with the Ziółkowski Basin with a stone-wood structure on a wooden Pallet from 1845 to 1860. The purpose of the construction of the wharf was to open a constantly flooded exit from the port to the Gulf of Gdańsk. At that time the mouth of the Dead Vistula was closed for ships between Wisłouszcie and Westerplatte and the process of forming the Westerplatte peninsula began. Other sections of the plate wharf were formed from 1930 to 1970.
