In the Port of Gdańsk the Marine Incubator will be created

Today, buildings not suitable for use, soon space for cooperation with start-ups, youth training, office and conference spaces. Port Gdańsk wants to allow specialist education not only to schools or universities, but also to its contractors.

The building of the former garages at 57 Zaspa Street does not encourage visitors to visit. It partly serves as a warehouse of old equipment, but was mostly excluded from use due to poor technical condition. The board of the Maritime Port Gdańsk decided to breathe new life into it. A contract has just been signed to revitalize space and cooperate with the Center for New Competences.

– We received a renewal loan under the Regional Operational Programme of Pomorskie Voivodship 2014-2020. Thanks to these funds, within a few years, a building will be in the place of ruin, where young innovative entrepreneurs will be able to work, and school pupils will be trained towards working in the maritime industry. We see the problem with gaining specialists, so we decided that we would actively participate in the education of our future staff – says Łukasz Greinke, President of ZMPG.

The facility, owned by the Gdańsk Port Board, has more than 470 square meters. The reconstruction will create office spaces, co-working spaces, conference rooms and a cafe.

– Both start-ups, students and larger commercial companies, such as our contractors, will benefit from the Incubator's conference space on preferential terms. In the newly established space, modern simulators and the effects of joint R & D projects with universities and vocational schools from Tricity will be available. We also see the possibility of carrying out student practices, workshops on port issues or multimedia activities for school students, which can also be conducted by our specialists – explains Jowita Zielinkiewicz, Director of Innovation and Funding at the Port of Gdańsk.

The Board of Port also signed a contract with the Centre for New Competences, which will allow to conduct specialist courseon stimulants. As a result, students, students or future employees of the port-logistics industry will learn about the specifics of their future work in realistic conditions.

– Employers, with adequate technical and logistical facilities, are able to provide the best conditions for the profession to be taught and to be later employed. This training model also guarantees the impact of employers on the training process of young people according to the most current market needs. Students who received education under the supervision of a given employer often find permanent employment later on," explains Janusz Karp, Director of the Department of Maritime Education in the Ministry of Maritime Economy and Inland Shipping.

– Currently we have an unprecedented increase in port handling in Poland. We expect further, strong pro-development impulses. This makes it clear to everyone who is close to this industry that without cooperation around the acquisition of the best staff, we will not take this opportunity. Therefore, I am very optimistic when I meet with the understanding and commitment of the Management Board of the Maritime Port of Gdańsk to create a strong training centre with professional facilities. Comparing the methodology of training in other global centres, I am sure that the strategy adopted in the Centre for New Competences is carried out in the most innovative way – explains Tomasz Lisiecki from the Centre for New Competences.
