Vietnam strengthens its coast guard

According to the U.S. Embassy's Facebook post, on Friday, USCGC John Midgett (WHEC-726) unit, along with the crew, arrived safely at the Vietnamese port.

"The U.S. government has given this ship to set an example of strong cooperation on maritime security between two countries and to help ensure an order based on the rules of the East Sea," the post states.

Ex USCGC John Midgett is a unit with a displacement of over 3,000 tons, measuring about 115 meters, ekon speed/max. 12 knots/29 knots. Most radars and weapons systems on it were removed before it was handed over to Vietnam, except for the 76-millimeter naval cannon.

Prior to the handover of the Vietnamese Coast Guard, the CSB 8021 unit was renovated and tested and completely repainted by the American side with the emblem and flag of Vietnam.

It is the second unit from US Coast Guard resources after USCGC Morgenthau transferred to Vietnam since 2017.
