Launching another frigate Ruggiero di Lauria

In the first days of October, the shipyard giant Fincantieri presents another important achievement – launching a key unit for Marina Militare, a multi-purpose patrol frigate version Light+ Ruggiero di Lauria. It is a milestone in the implementation of the ambitious modernisation plan of Marina Militare, emphasizing Fincantieri's dominant position in the shipbuilding industry.

Patrol frigate Ruggiero di Lauria It features impressive dimensions, advanced weapons and a significant buoyancy that reaches 6270 tons. Its total length is 143 metres. The ship is capable of reaching a speed exceeding 31 knots, depending on the configuration and operating conditions, with a crew of 171 people. Moreover, the ship is equipped with CODG drive, connecting the diesel engine to the gas turbine, and an additional electric drive system.
A special place for RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) boats up to 11 metres long was set up on board the ship. These boats can be both launched and fished with side cranes or a special ramp located in the rear of the ship. Various weapons configurations make it a flexible tool in the waters, capable not only of self-defense, but in the full version also for comprehensive defense against many threats.
Ambitious modernization of Marina Militarye
These new units are part of an ambitious plan to modernise the Italian Navy, Marina Militare, launched in 2015. Approved by the Italian government and parliament, the plan includes a number of modern ships, such as PPA patrol frigates, to meet increasing maritime safety requirements in the 21st century.

PPA frigates are a synthesis of modern technologies and versatility of applications. They are designed to include search and rescue tasks and boarding and inspection operations. A fully equipped PPA type vessel is also capable of operating on the front line in combat situations.
