Increase of resources for construction of the Water Road from the Vistula Basin to the Gulf of Gdańsk

The government plans to increase the funds for the construction of the water road connecting Zalew Wiślana with the Gulf of Gdańsk to PLN 2 160 499 104 and to extend the deadline for the project to 2026. Such a proposal follows from the list of legislative and programming work of the Council of Ministers, which assumes a revision of the resolution on this matter.

Earlier, the previous government decided to allocate about PLN 2 billion to this project. However, the key section of the water track, about 900 metres long, was not included at the time, which means that the current waterway does not provide access to the port of Elbląg. According to the new project, the missing section will cover the waterway on the Elbląg River, from point P2 to point Port, beyond the bridge of the European Union Route.

Amendment of Resolution No 57/2016 is necessary to allow access to Elbląg port for units with parameters L=100 m, B=20 m and T=4.5 m, as well as shoulder kits of 180 m length. The amendment also provides for an updated in-kind and financial schedule, which will cover the scope of the implementation of works on the missing section of the water track.

Experts point out that the full completion of this investment could significantly affect the economic development of the region and improve the accessibility of Elbląg port, thereby increasing its competitiveness. This ambitious project aims not only to increase logistics opportunities, but also to strengthen Poland's international position in the context of water transport.

This programme, although financially and technically demanding, is a key element of the maritime infrastructure development strategy in Poland. Implementation of such a project requires not only close cooperation between different actors, but also the use of modern technologies and advanced engineering methods.

The planned amendment is a step towards the future, where Polish ports can compete effectively with other European transport centres, thus contributing to the economic growth of the whole country.
